Short poem titled “Breather,” illustrated and displayed on a black-and-white photograph of a man standing quietly among trees, viewed in silhouette.

Reflections

A short poem about mental health, Breather invites us to pause when we feel anxious. The poem begins with a reminder meant to steady us: Your legs still have strength / You still draw breath. Even after times of stress or emotional fatigue, we endure.

The second stanza describes lessons drawn from nature. The sun continues to shine, steady and unconcerned. The familiar cricket sings his song without fussing. These images suggest a way of being that does not revolve around regret, overthinking, or the approval of others—only presence and mindfulness.

In the third stanza, deception and mistakes are acknowledged. But the poem encourages us to let go. Instead of revisiting past mistakes, we are invited to Let the memory fade like vapor / In the warmth of this day.

In the final stanza, worry begins to loosen its hold. Nature becomes a model for living in the moment: Revel in the breath of the wind / Leave your worry behind.

Affirmation

I don’t have to figure everything out right now.

I can stop, catch my breath, and take the day as it comes.
