A short poem about social media. Sometimes I wonder:
Would Shakespeare have a YouTube channel?
Would Emily Dickinson post on Instagram?
Would Wordsworth count likes and followers?
Social media has given writers remarkable opportunities to reach readers. At the same time, it encourages speed, novelty, and constant calls for attention. More traditional forms of writing, by contrast, ask us to slow down and reflect.
Beneath the light-hearted approach of this poem is a serious question: How do we preserve reflection and depth in an era of constant distraction?
As a writer, I am grateful for the opportunity to share my work online. Many of the readers who visit this website first discovered my poems through social media. Yet I also recognize the challenge. The same tools that connect us make it more difficult to pause, reflect, and listen.
The answer is not to reject new technology, but to use it wisely. A poem, a book, a thoughtful conversation, or a moment of reflection can remind us that sometimes we need to slow down. Let's make room for wisdom, beauty, and thoughtful conversation—even on social media.
