Reflections
Solitude is a short poem about life experience. It begins with a question: Why, you ask, do I seek solitude? Instead of answering directly, the poet invites the reader to consider an image: Go ask the tree that stands in an empty field. The solitary tree is the central metaphor of the poem.
A tree that grows alone endures both calm and hardship. As the poet observes, In sunlight it grows; in a storm it bends. These simple lines describe an important truth. Growth is not always comfortable. Difficult experiences—storms—may reveal strengths we did not know we possessed.
The poem then shifts from the image of the tree to the speaker’s own life. There was a time when he sought the company of others: Once I sought society. The world itself became his teacher: The world itself became my school. Yet the lessons he learned were not always to his benefit. Endless noise and superficial conversation can drown out self-knowledge. As the poet writes, Better at times to hear my own thoughts / Than endless chatter, careless and cruel.
This experience leads to a change in perspective. The speaker chooses to embrace solitude: So I decided to welcome solitude. The poet learns to appreciate stillness and reflection, to count the worth of an hour alone.
The final lines return to the powerful image introduced at the beginning of the poem. Having endured both light and storm, the speaker now stands with greater strength and clarity: I treasured the sun and withstood the storm. Like the solitary tree in the field, his inner life has grown deeper and stronger. The poem closes with an image of maturity and stability: My soul upright— a tree fully grown.
The poem reminds us that solitude does not have to mean loneliness. It can lead to growth, resilience, and self-discovery. Just as a tree grows stronger through the seasons, a person who learns to value solitude may discover unexpected strength within.
Affirmation
I welcome moments of solitude and reflection. In stillness, I hear my own thoughts more clearly and discover strength within myself.
