The Secret Message

Want to do something meaningful? Just show up.
Reflections
The Secret Message is a short poem about kindness. At the beginning of The Secret Message, someone arrives and stops outside a wall. The person behind the wall cannot see the visitor. The wall stands between them.
Then a sound comes through the stone—faint and muffled, yet clear enough to reveal something meaningful to the person trapped behind the wall: someone is there. That simple realization changes everything. The darkness is no longer complete, just as a single star makes a night sky feel less empty.
This is a metaphor for acts of kindness. We may think we need to say something wise, fix a problem, or know exactly what another person needs. But sometimes our presence is enough. A phone call, a visit, a message, or simply sitting beside someone can say, You matter. You are not alone.
The single star in the poem represents that kind of presence. One star does not light the whole night sky, but it prevents the darkness from being absolute. In the same way, one person cannot take away all of another person’s pain, but can still have a powerful effect on how that person experiences their circumstances.
Affirmation
I do not have to solve the problems of the people I care about. What matters is showing up with kindness.
